Affordable firewall and VPN protection

Firewalls and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are two key tools you can use to protect your network. Together they combat the ever-growing range of viruses and would-be hackers who want nothing more than to disrupt or damage your network. HP offers a collection of solutions to help you easily add these security features to your network:

The HP ProLiant DL320 Firewall/VPN/Cache Server [HP USA | English] is an affordable, integrated, easy-to-use, and manageable hardware security and caching solution that you can quickly deploy to help protect key business applications, such as Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook Web Access, Internet Information Services, and SharePoint® Portal Server.
This server solution integrates neatly with Windows® Active Directory® services so you can easily apply group- and user-level policy and authentication across a broad range of scenarios, including firewall policy, VPN authentication, and outbound Web proxy and access control.
The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl series includes an integrated firewall and an optional VPN module so you can securely connect your company network to the Internet using a single product. The routers in this series also allow you to connect a collection of office locations together over a Wide Area Network (WAN).

Centralise control of network security

HP can help you retain comprehensive, secure and centralised control of you wired and wireless LANs. HP ProCurve Access Control Security provides cost-effective, easy-to-manage solutions that check appropriate access at the network edge where external users connect, without compromising network functionality, allowing you to:

Establish preset rules for end users
Control user access at the edge of the network LAN
Build a sustainable audit trail so you can track and monitor network activity

Because you delegate access, authentication, and tracking to the point where traffic enters and leaves the network, decisions can be made immediately rather than deferring them to the core.

Ensure a secure and reliable connection to the Internet

The HP ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl [HP USA | English] series offers a unique combination of affordable high-performance routing, integrated security features such as stateful firewall with cyber defence engine, and a choice of WAN connections. To support an increasingly mobile workforce, it also provides optional IPSec VPN termination and client to allow up to 1000 remote users to connect to their corporate office over the Internet.

Designed to support up to four E1 (8 Mbps) connections at wire speed with full services enabled, the HP ProCurve Secure Router 7102dl provides small-sized branch offices with a safe and efficient multi-services WAN connection and secure Internet access for 10 to 100 users interconnecting up to 500 sites.
Designed to support up to eight E1 (16 Mbps) connections at wire speed with full services enabled and an optional redundant power-supply connection, the HP ProCurve Secure Router 7203dl provides medium-sized branch offices with a safe and efficient multi-services WAN connection and secure Internet access for 100 to 1000 users

Slow down new and unknown worms

Antivirus software is designed to look for virus signatures and trap infiltrators before they can spread through your network. However, when a new worm virus is first released and its signature is unknown, it can potentially run rampant on your company's network.

HP Labs has developed Virus Throttling technology to slow the spread of new and unknown worms and limit their damage to your network. Instead of the virus signature, it targets virus behaviour, hampers network traffic from the infected system, and notifies you of the problem so you have time to respond.

The technology is currently available in select HP networking and server products:

The HP ProCurve Networking Switch 5300xl features built-in Virus Throttling technology so that, when used as a router, suspect traffic can be “throttled” to prevent the spread of even the latest worms and viruses. Because the switch can monitor all ports for worm virus activity, its Virus Throttling capability provides centralised worm control.
A free software update [HP USA | English] for the switch strengthens the security of your network, and gives network administrators more options to manage access for different classes of users. In addition, it prevents Denial of Service (DOS) attacks from impacting network availability, which increases network uptime and resiliency. It also simplifies and automates configuration of network devices to reduce the costs of deployment.
The HP ProLiant Essentials Intelligent Networking Pack Software [HP USA | English] with Virus Throttling technology protects the local network environment in case one of your individual HP ProLiant servers becomes infected with a worm virus. This can help slow the spread of a virus from an infected server to other servers on your network.

Store user data at your data centre

To help guard your network from viruses, a key strategy is to store the majority of user data in your data centre instead of on individual computers. Because viruses spread with file transfer, they have a harder time propagating when users don't send files to one another via email. It’s also easier to manage virus protection at a single data centre than at every PC in your office.

HP thin clients can be key components in this strategy because they don't have hard drives, so you are guaranteed that all data resides in the data centre. Learn more about this approach in this Thin Client Vulnerability Analysis [HP USA | English] PDF.

Plus, because viruses and intruders can also find their way into your network via the unattended thin clients at your data centre, HP thin clients allow you to lock down peripheral ports so they won't communicate with outside peripherals, such as USB drives, that can harbour viruses or be a back-door opening for data theft.
