Secure your data

Ensure that the data on your company systems cannot be accessed, tampered with, or corrupted by unauthorised users.
An HP iPAQ
Personal systems – desktops, notebooks and other mobile devices – are the gateway to your company system, but if not properly secured, they also give hackers and thieves access to confidential information. That data, as well as that from printers, needs to be protected in a way that doesn't hinder work, but still provides sufficient security.

Deploy simple but strong built-in authentication

HP makes it easy to simplify and strengthen the security of your data, with a combination of authentication features that you can start using every time you power up your HP business PC or handheld.

Power-on passwords
Users must enter a password before the BIOS boots and the operating system loads.
Drive locks
A BIOS-level password on the hard drive means even if someone manages to bypass the standard Microsoft® Windows® login, they need to know yet another password to access the data.
Administrator passwords
Allow a computer to boot up, but restrict access to BIOS settings such as the drive lock.
Biometric fingerprint readers
Your fingerprint becomes the password. Standard on select HP iPAQ Pocket PCs and optional for desktops, workstations and notebooks.
802.11 security standards
Fully supported

Advance your authentication beyond basic passwords

When you purchase selected new HP business computers you can also add integrated Smart Card security [HP USA | English] to the system. Capabilities include:

A patented pre-boot Smart Card that prevents the computer's operating system from loading if the proper Smart Card isn't inserted
A biometric fingerprint reader that you can purchase as an accessory for a computer so a fingerprint becomes a user's password
A secure lock that helps prevent unauthorised access to an unattended computer by locking it if the Smart Card is removed
USB Smart Card keyboards or card readers that use Smart Card technology to prevent unauthorised access to a system and the network
HP ProtectTools Credential Manager with Smart Card option, for protection against unauthorised access to a computer system without a valid Smart Card (see below)

Smart Card functionality can be added to PCs you already own, or those without the capability integrated, simply by purchasing a PC Smart Card reader.

Protect your mobile devices and data

HP ProtectTools – a family of security products – give you safer ways to stay in control and secure your data while on the move, reducing the technical and financial risks to your business.

HP ProtectTools for notebook PCs

The foundation for HP ProtectTools on notebook PCs begins with HP ProtectTools Security Manager [HP USA | English] – a single user interface for unifying security capabilities on HP client PCs, with support for:

BIOS configuration for HP ProtectTools*
Enables authorised users to conveniently access and configure system bios and security settings without rebooting the PC
Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools*
Highly integrated to support simple, secure multi-factor authentication – requiring a combination of two or more validation criteria – and password management (I think we still need to mention GUI, and single-sign on
Smart Card Manager for HP ProtectTools
Enables you to initialise and configure Smart Cards, and manage Smart Card accounts and security settings for enhanced protection against unauthorised access
Embedded Security Manager for HP ProtectTools
Manages password encryption, Smart Cards, USB tokens and third-party biometric devices, and enables you to configure and manage your notebook's built-in Trusted Platform Module security chip (see below)
Trusted Platform Module Embedded Security Chip
A hardware security module that integrates the core elements of trust into the subsystem, developed through HP’s role as a founding promoter of the Trusted Computing Group . The TPM Embedded Security Chip uses a root key protected in silicon to enhance native Microsoft® operating system file and folder encryption and lay the foundation for authentication of TPM-enabled PCs to the corporate network

* Preinstalled on selected HP notebooks. For more information on the HP ProtectTools modules your notebook supports, talk to your local HP partner .

HP ProtectTools for HP iPAQ Pocket PCs

Safeguard data on your thin clients

Integrate thin clients with HP servers in your secure data centre so the expensive computer components and key data are safe in one location. The thin client becomes less expensive to replace because the expensive components and irreplaceable data are on the server. Stolen thin clients become useless to thieves because the clients cannot run without their integrated servers.

Since December, 2004, HP Compaq Thin Client t5000 Series will be pre-loaded with Sygate Security Agent 4.0 for Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded. This solution provides an application-centric firewall, application-based intrusion prevention engine, and enhanced virus protection in server-based computing environments. Learn more about this computing model and its security benefits in the “Is server-based computing right for you?” white paper.
