Tape-based backup and recovery

Online data stored on servers, workstations and even personal PCs is vulnerable to hackers, viruses and other online threats, as well as to system failure. When you make backups of important information to tape-based systems, a copy of the data moves offline to removable storage where it is safe. HP believes tape-based solutions provide the foundation for any effective data protection strategy.

Why choose tape-based backup?

Tape is the most cost-effective solution from a cost-per-megabyte perspective.
Tape is the only technology other than optical that offers removable storage suitable for offsite storage.
You can use tape-based solutions to create daily and weekly backups, then move that data offsite for maximum protection as well as keep archival copies for years.
Tape is best suited for doing volume restores. The tape format is self-describing, so no other information is needed to re-create the files.
With hardware compression, tape backup will consume less space than the same backup to disk.
Offline storage is removable, which can be labelled and stored off-site in a shelf or rack.
Offline storage of electronic records is traditionally used for making disaster copies of records and also for records where the likelihood of retrieval is minimal.

Effective offline backup with HP StorageWorks tape drives

HP offers a wide variety of tape backup solutions to fit any business need. Proven reliability, inexpensive media, easy-to-use tools, and low-maintenance design are just a few of the reasons tape-based solutions from HP are one of the most affordable ways to add data backup to your infrastructure.

For example, the HP StorageWorks DAT 40 [HP USA / English] and HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drives [HP USA / English] are now offered with USB connections to provide the reliability and cost effectiveness of DAT with the plug and play capabilities of USB 2.0. These drives, suitable for your workstation or server needs can be out of the box and ready to use in less than 60 seconds. The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 Tape Drive [HP USA | English] offers superdrive capacity in a compact half-height format, that fits into desktop workstations and entry-level ProLiant servers, for an all-in-one server and backup solution. All of these drives offer exclusive One Button Disaster Recovery (OBDR), which when combined with HP ProLiant servers allows even non-IT staff to independently restore an operating system, applications, drivers, and data on a key system with the push of a button and limited IT support.

The DAT 40, DAT 72 and Ultrium 448 are only three options in a complete line of HP StorageWorks tape solutions [HP USA | English] that support a variety of formats and capacities, and HP is leading the initiative for open, standard tape format with Ultrium LTO, and DDS/DAT formats.

Automated and scalable solutions for growing business needs

As your business grows, you may need a more flexible and larger tape-based solution. HP StorageWorks tape autoloaders [HP USA | English] hold multiple tape cartridges and manage tape swapping for you. Tape autoloaders are perfect if you want to automate your backup process and schedule backups on certain servers at certain times without manual intervention.

If a higher capacity, faster backup is required, a tape library featuring multiple drives is recommended. Tape libraries allow you to move your backup to your local area network or storage area network and begin to consolidate backups into a single library. For example, the HP StorageWorks MSL6000 Tape Library [HP USA | English] offers a large capacity and features high-performance Ultrium drives, so you can back up large amounts of data in a limited amount of time. You can manage it remotely with a web-based interface or from the touch-screen graphical interface right on the front panel. The HP StorageWorks MSL tape library supports up to 16 tape drives, so you can scale your library capacity as your data needs grow.
